Ⅱ.Cloze Test(10 points, 1 point for each)

Advertising is different from selling. Salesmen depend   11   the person-to-person approach in trying to persuade consumers to buy. Advertising,   12  ,  has to reach consumers indirectly through messages on radio and television, in the newspapers, or even on handbills (传单) given to you in the street.

Once again, the purpose of advertising is to sell goods. This means that the advertiser is going to try to make you think you want something his something  13   you need it or not.   14  , the advertiser is creating a(n)  15   for his product. This is fine. Remember, all the goods being produced today have to be sold. And you cannot buy something if you do not know about it.

All consumers are influenced by brand names. Advertisers try to get people   16   to a brand because they know that, in later years, many of the consumers will   17   to this brand. Therefore commercials are repeated over and over again on radio and television. We soon get to know them by   18  . Some advertisers stay with particular radio or television stars, and consumers come to   19   a product with a famous person.

You are probably wondering, at this point, whether advertising is good or bad. Actually, it may be     20   of both, but decide for yourself.

Ⅲ.Reading Comprehension (30 points, 2 points for each)

Passage One

The idea of a special day to honor mothers was first put forward in America in 1907. Two years later a woman, Mrs. John Bruce Dodd, in the state of Washington proposed a similar day to honor the head of the family – the father. Her mother died when she was very young, and she was brought up by her father. She loved her father very much.

In response to Mrs. Dodd's idea that same year 1909, the state governor of Washington officially announced the third Sunday in June Father's Day. The idea was officially approved by President Woodrow Wilson in 1916. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge recommended national observance(庆祝) of the occasion to establish more intimate relations between fathers and their children, and to impress upon fathers the full measure or their obligations. The red or white rose is recognized as the official Father's Day flower.

Father's Day took longer to establish on a national scale than Mother's Day, but as the idea gained popularity, tradesmen and manufacturers began to see the commercial possibilities. They encouraged sons and daughters honor their fathers with small thank – you resents, such as a tie or a pair of socks, as well as by sending greeting cards.

During the Second World War, American servicemen stationed in Britain began to request Father's Day greeting cards to send home. This generated a response with British card publisher. Though at first the British public was slow to accept this rather artificial day, it's now well celebrated in Britain on the third Sunday in June in much the same way as in America.

Passage Two

The concept of environmentis certainly difficult and may even be misunderstood; but we have no better substitute. It seems simple enough to distinguish between the organism and the surrounding environment and to separate forces acting on an organism into those that are internal and biological and those that are external and environmental. But in actual practice, this system breaks down in many ways, because the organism and the environment are constantly interacting so that the environment is modified by the organism and vice versa(反之亦然).

In the case of man, the difficulties with the environmental concept are even more complicated because we have to deal with man as an animal and with man as a bearer of culture. If we look at man as an animal and try to analyze the environmental forces that are acting on the organism, we find that we have to deal with things like climate, soil, plants and suchlike factors common to all biological situations. But we also find, always, very important environmental influences that we can only class as cultural, which modify the physical and biological factors. But man, as we know him, is always a bearer of culture; and, if we sturdy human culture, we find that it ,in turn, is modified by the environmental factors of climate and geography. We thus easily get into great difficulties from the necessity of viewing culture, at one moment, as a part of the man and at another moment, as a part of the environment.

26. ____ According to the author, which of the following can best describe the popular understanding of environment?

[A] Confused.

[B] Conflicting

[C] Faultless.

[B] it fails to distinguish between internal and external forces acting on the organism

[C] the organism and the environment are exerting influence on each other

[D] the relationship between the organism and the environment is unknown

28. In analyzing the environmental forces acting on man, the author indicates that ____ .

[A] biological factors are less important to other animals than cultural factors to man

[B] both man and other animals are modified by biological, physical and cultural forces

[C] man is modified by both cultural environment and natural environment

[D] physical and biological factors exert more influence on other animals than on man

29. As for culture, the author points out that ____ .

[A] it is something totally independent of the environment

[B] it is something solely belonging to the environment

[C] it is a part of the man as well as the environment

[D] it is a product of human beings' biological instincts

30. In this passage, the author is primarily concerned with ____ .

[A] the interpretation of the term environment

[B] the discussion on organisms and biological environment

[C] the comparison of internal and external forces acting on man

[D] the influence of physical and biological factors on human culture

Passage Three

Some psychologists maintain that mental acts such as thinking are not performed in the brain alone, but that one's muscles also participate. It may be said that we think with our muscles in somewhat the same way that we listen to music with our bodies.

You surely are not surprised to be told that you usually listen to music not only with your ears but with your whole body. Few people can listen to music that is more or less familiar without moving their body or, more specifically, some part of their body. Often when one listens to a concert on the radio, he is attracted to direct the band even though he knows there is a good conductor on the job.

Strange as this behavior may be , there is a very good reason for it. One cannot derive all possible enjoyment from music unless he participates, so to speak, in its performance. This listener feels himself into the music with more or less noticeable motions of his body.

The muscles of the body actually participate in the mental process of thinking in the same way ,but this participation is less obvious because it is less noticeable.

31. Some psychologists tend to believe that thinking is ____ .

[A] a process happening outside the brain

[B] a process that only involves one's brain

[C] a process involving both the brain and muscles

[D] more of a physical process than a mental action

32. The process of thinking and that of listening to music is similar in that ____.

[A] both processes are less noticeable

[B] neither involves the use of the brain

[C] both bring enjoyment to a person

[D] neither is solely a mental process

33. Few people are able to listen to familiar music on the radio without ____.

[A] singing along with the music

[B] moving some parts of their bodies

[C] stopping the job they are doing

[D] wishing to see the actual performance

34. Muscle participation in the process of thinking is ____ .

[A] purposeful

[B] apparent

[C] indistinct

[D] impressive

35. The passage is concerned primarily with ____ .

[A] muscle participation in mental activities

[B] muscle participation in music appreciation

[C] the difference between thinking and music appreciation

[D] the relationship between thinking and music appreciation

More than 30,000 drivers and front seat passengers are killed of seriously injured each year. At a speed of only 30 miles per hour it is the same as falling from a thirdfloor window. Wearing a seat belt saves lives; it reduces your chance of death or serious injury by more than half. There- fore drivers or front passengers over 14 in most vehicles must wear a seat belt.

However, you do not have to wear a seat belt if you are reversing your vehicle; or you are making a local delivery or collection using a special vehicle; or if you have valid medical certificate which excuse you from wearing it. Make sure these circumstances apply to you before you decide not to wear your seat belt. Remember you may be taken to court for not doing so, and you may be fined if you cannot prove to the court that you have been excused from wearing it.
